THE BIRTH AND FACTS ABOUT AKORAYE DAY
The origin of Akoraye Day Celebration could be traced to the awareness of the community in 1977 that government alone could not afford to provide all the necessary facilities required by her citizenry. Hence, Modakeke community leaders at that time initiated the idea of raising funds for self-help community development projects. It was organized as a forum for sons and daughters of Modakeke as well as their invited guests to meet and raise funds for the development of the town.
Although, the laudable aims and objectives of the Akoraye Day were initially misunderstood and misconstrued by some people outside the community, especially when the celebration was tagged “Modakeke Akoraaye Day” in 1984. It is a thing of joy today that almost every community within and outside the state has now embraced the idea for her developmental purposes.
In actual fact, the initiative was a brain-child of some concerned Modakeke Community leaders and interest groups that something like an ultra-modern palace, post-office, police station, town hall, and so on, should be embarked upon for the development of the community. Interestingly, all the sons and daughters of Modakeke endorsed the idea.
To facilitate the execution of the envisaged projects, the first fund-raising ceremony was successfully organized in the town in 1977. The funds raised were judiciously spent to commence work on modern Ogunsua’s palace, the Police Station and the Post Office with Postmaster’s accommodation.
However, it is to be noted that when similar exercise was organized in 1980, it was violently disrupted by our adversaries as a result of political whims. But to God be the glory and honour, the disturbances, instead of dampening the morale of Modakeke Community, rekindled the awareness of Modakeke sons and daughters at home and abroad as to the need to pursue the objectives with more determination and commitment. That is, our yearnings and aspirations for educational development, social awareness, economic progress, and political future.
Therefore, it was resolved that the last Saturday of every December should be marked for Modakeke Akoraye Day Celebration. This has commenced since December 1984 to date. However, little shifts have been recently accommodated due to some overlaps with Christmas celebration.
Accountability and transparency are the guiding principles of Modakeke Community leaders. For the benefit of those who are not yet aware of the project that had been executed, we are pleased to put it on record that from the fund raising activities, the following had been completed.
- Modakeke High School
- Ultra-Modern Palace
- A modern Police Station
- A Post Office with a befitting Postmaster’s accommodation
- Olorunsogo Market – a daily periodic market for the town
- A Customary Court
- Modakeke Community Grammar School
- Ogunsua Grammar School

- Orisunmibare Plank Market
- Olorunsogo Motor Park
- NERC (formerly PHCN) Control Room
- Modakeke Civic Centre

- High Court of Justice.
Once again, we are so proud to state that the self-help ceremony which was initiated by Modakeke is not only progressing, but has been widely accepted as a veritable tool for developmental purpose in many parts of the country today.
As proud sons and daughters of Modakeke, our collective strength lies in unity and collaboration. Together, we possess the power to drive significant change and foster the development of our beloved town.
By coming together, we create an environment ripe for progress, innovation, and sustainable growth. Each one of us holds a piece of the puzzle that, when combined, forms a brighter future for Modakeke.
